Finanzbeamtin Katharina Kamp muss bei dem Gestütsbesitzer Carl von Balkhausen Steuerschulden eintreiben. Sie vereinbart einen Ortstermin, doch der grantige Gutsherr ignoriert sie. Als Katharina unverhofft ihren Bruder und dessen Frau durch einen Unfall verliert, hat sie zunächst ganz andere Sorgen. Liebevoll kümmert sie sich um ihre Nichte Lara, die den Unfall überlebte und nun für unbestimmte Zeit im Rollstuhl sitzt.
